When William Wordsworth penned his poem about the Borrowdale Yews in 1803, he captured the essence of the area's natural beauty with references to berries, moss and the sound of water in Glaramara's inmost caves. However, he made no mention of the Seathwaite wad mine, which stands tall on the hillside where he stood.
Though Wordsworth poem's painted a picture of the Lake District as a serene natural wonder for the early tourists, the area has been a hub of industry for thousands of years.
Farmers, miners, quarrymen, charcoal burners, and smelters all experienced the valley in different ways.
This duality is a crucial part of the Borrowdale Story. As you explore the area, you may come across names that hark back to area's industrial past. The paths you walk on and the buildings you stay in may be a testament to the hard work and ingenuity of the people who lived and worked here.
